Can you spring clean your soul with a FRESH NEW TREAT

IMG_4508.jpg

Spring cleaning.

Does anyone do it anymore? After the long dark days of winter, taking a breath again and letting the sunshine in and seeing all the dirt and dust it reveals. Cleaning all those hard-to-reach places, the curtains and carpets, the blankets and pillows; airing the house and polishing the windows.

No, me neither. Maybe we don't create as much dirt as we used to?  Or we clean everything 'properly' these days more regularly?

What I DO feel is needed, though, is what I'm calling a "soul spring clean."  A FRESH NEW TREAT  after what may have been the long dark night of the soul; or the exhaustion of Lent and Holy Week followed by the exhilaration of  Easter.

Maybe it's only exhausted clergy who see the humour in this? It appeared on social media last week but I can't discover who was responsible so that I could get permission to post. Let me know if you know who it belongs to!

Maybe it's only exhausted clergy who see the humour in this? It appeared on social media last week but I can't discover who was responsible so that I could get permission to post. Let me know if you know who it belongs to!

Like the dust and dirt in my house showing up in the spring sunshine, there are areas in my soul which need dealing with. Maybe you know that feeling too? And maybe it's time to do something about it?  Before it's too late and summer comes full tilt into our lives and we've forgotten the spring cleaning we intended to do.

What we need is A FRESH NEW TREAT for our souls.

Here's the recipe:

 - Take 1 freshly spring cleaned retreat centre (the Volunteer Week worked wonders!)

-  Add some new ingredients, including creative worship, locally sourced fresh ingredients for meals, exciting new retreat ideas and dates

-  Stir in some treats, such as some pampering, wine with supper included in the price, a 25% discount for all those in full time Christian ministry

-  Rest and allow to steep.  Allow the peace and presence of the Lord to come streaming deeply into you, into the real you, in a way you've perhaps not had time or inclination to do recently. Take time to do some spring cleaning of your soul.

- swirl with a giant swizzle stick, and savour.

- To enjoy at its best, taste soon. Take a taste  - come and join us. A retreat at The Vine is delicious!

THE VINE: A sanctuary in which God's workers feel cherished, rested and closer to God - to bear more fruit

Jesus said: I am the Vine .. remain in me .. and bear much fruit (John 15)

When prayers are answered

Why I am surprised by answers to prayers?  He may be a God of surprises, but shouldn't we expect and anticipate an answer when we talk with Him?  When we share with Him our hearts, our desires, our needs, our cares?

I've heard that there are three answers to prayer - yes, no, wait.

I think I've had all three several times recently. Did I tell you what's happened?

bright cheerful daffodils are brightening the grounds, all around the front garden, in the orchard ... a wonderful gift last August from a friend!

bright cheerful daffodils are brightening the grounds, all around the front garden, in the orchard ... a wonderful gift last August from a friend!

- All those seemingly unsolvable problems from 6 - 9 months ago have each been answered well - but I had to learn to wait!  Among them - the cottage was sold, the health issues have disappeared, and other answers too, solving several problems

- bookings are beginning to happen, people are coming on retreat and we are watching in humble amazement as the Lord blesses those who come

- a significant donation has been given (from the USA) so that the chapel and the parking area can be finished, work which will be done in April. How we thank God!

- another much smaller donation has been pledged, which enables the office to be finished

- there are a handful of regular supporters/Friends of the Vine, supporting the work through monthly giving. Not nearly enough yet, but it's a start. I'm being paid again after several months of no income at all

- a full house for the Volunteers Week, with people coming to work on getting the house and grounds ready for the summer. They are going to be sponsored for their physical hours of work (3 -4 hrs each afternoon) and the money raised will go towards the purchase of the summer house, a much-needed further quiet space for retreatants to use. Join in sponsoring them  - without doing any physical work you can help towards the project!  CLICK HERE TO SPONSOR A VOLUNTEER!

- a single donation to enable someone to come on retreat for 2 nights who otherwise couldn't afford it and another payment for a specific individual to come for a few nights

- some rest, refreshment and renewal for us. We escaped for a week, the first time we have had a week away as just the two of us for over a year. It was wonderful; we were really blessed especially through some very helpful books - we both highly recommend "The Day is Yours - slow moving spirituality in a fast moving world" by Ian Stackhouse. It's being worked out in new daily rhythms of grace applied to our life at Mays Farm!

- the provision of a Christian part-time housekeeper! Realising it's no longer possible for me to cook, housekeep, garden, as well as lead retreats, provide spiritual direction and hospitality, now that there are more people here. So we are grateful for the unexpected provision of Rachel, who spent her teenage years in a Christian retreat centre, attends a local Vineyard church and goes to New Wine and has been on several retreats herself. Please pray for her as she begins with us on Monday March 31  (part time, 2-3 hours every Monday - Friday)

- you have been praying and supporting us! THANK YOU.

Thank you for your prayers thus far. Please keep praying -

the ministry can't do this without you!

COULD YOU BE A FRIEND?

Friends. Everyone likes having good friends. We know that we wouldn't be here without the help of friends. Friends who have planted, painted, prayed, propped up and played in this place. Friends who have been there when needed.

"A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need." Proverbs 17:17 (NLT)

Mays Farm - over a hundred years ago

Mays Farm - over a hundred years ago

Mays Farm today

Mays Farm today

Friends who've been friends forever. Friends made since being here. The richness of a diversity of friendship.

"When Job prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his fortunes. In fact, the LORD gave him twice as much as before!" Job 42:10 (NLT)

Friends laugh, friends enable, friends support, friends pray. They rejoice, they mourn -

"Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn." Roms 12:5 (NIV)

And so the FRIENDS OF THE VINE is a much-needed group of people who support this ministry of retreats.

BUT WE NEED MORE FRIENDS in order to survive and provide this place for sanctuary and sustenance  -  a place which is really being appreciated by those who come.

"Thank you so much for such a wonderful few days of rest, refreshment and restoration. Before I came away I asked people to pray that God would speak and that I would have ears to listen and a heart to obey. These prayers have been answered, along with many more. Thank you so much. May the Lord bless you richly in your work here."   (Vicar, North West England)

"I  was treated like a princess!" (Vicar, Essex)

"A real treat - what a wonderful places to come and BE. Thank you!" (Writer, N London)

"I feel this has been a bit of a 'wake-up' call to both being aware of and receiving God's grace. It has been such a lovely, peaceful and blessed weekend - thank you so much!"  (Chocolate consumer on the Hotel de Chocolate retreat!)

A Taste of Grace. Just for you.

GodsGrace2_HR.png

And through it all - the theme of grace. God's extravagant grace, extended to us through the cross of Christ, into our everyday situations. The Psalmist urged us to "Taste and see that the Lord is good," so we did. And He is.

Hotel de Chocolate Weekend Retreat

We are chocolated-out, we who came on the Hotel de Chocolate retreat! There were chocolate desserts. There was cocoa powder in the beef. Chocolate shower gels and body lotions. Chocolate brownies at tea time. And a glorious lingering heavenly chocolate tasting session with chocolate notes on things such as aroma, waxing and plant transference.

At one stage there was even chocolate syrup on our hands ...

There was breakfast in bed. Time for reading (dozing) in front of a roaring log fire. Aromatherapy scented hot towels. And one brave person went jogging in the rain to burn off some calories. That rain precluded enjoying hot chocolate around the fire pit in the evening; but someone else had brought a bottle of prosecco to share so we had that instead indoors!

Does your Vicar need renewing?

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEND YOUR VICAR AWAY?

I recently saw a woman reading the 'Shamen in Stilettos' book on the train the other day and I thought - women like her are desperate! Desperate for peace, love, restoration - which I know they could find through God's Holy Spirit while being at the Vine. There is a real ministry at The Vine for the "trendies" - women who have done a cookery course at River Cottage, tried a burlesque class and are probably looking for a spiritual thing to do - cue a Buddhist retreat or appointment with a trendy Shamen - but they are meant to be coming to The Vine, to find the Real meaning to Life, and to find the Lord.

Stressed out female city workers, women who work in the fashion industry and have lost sight of who they really are, women who work in politics - there is a real place and space of healing for them at The Vine.

But there is another group who need to come to The Vine – the clergy and those in full time Christian ministry.

Clergy – men and women in the ordained ministry, fighting battles on all fronts, whether spiritually, emotionally or indeed physically; at home, at church, in their ministry. They come to us worn down and burned out. In need of a ‘safe’ place to let down their guard, let out those tears, and find a listening ear and a praying atmosphere.

They are each given a beautiful breakfast in bed, and time to BE. Each room is individually and pleasingly furnished, with lovely fabrics, comfortable beds – they might have an old plantation fourposter to luxuriate in, or a comfy large sofa to curl up on. Aromatherapy oils and cherry stone comforters are available to borrow and use; a well stocked library to browse; there is plenty of tea, coffee, and herbals to drink, and in the winter they can relax by a roaring log fire in either the library or the sitting room; and in the summer, take a deckchair into the wild flower meadow or the orchard. Massages and facials as well as spiritual direction are all available from experts; there’s lots of delicious food - all home cooked in the Aga, from home made soup to cream teas and always plenty of fresh fruit and local eggs.

Clergy are so often stressed out or ministried out or meeting-ed out; busy or lonely; trying to have it all and be it all and do it all. They can come to The Vine and discover afresh the peace that comes from the Lord, and which passes all understanding. It’s what they need; and many of them are finding it here.

"Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, for the most timely and special of retreats. This really is a wonderful place of God. I will be back again, this time with my hubby. Thank you, Penelope! "  (a Vicar from Kent, January 2014)

"Thank you for making your home a haven of peace and tranquillity and with such a wonderful sense of God's peace, which I needed to experience at a major crossroads in my life. Hope to be back again. and the meals were scrummy too!" (A Vicar from Hampshire, January 2014)

BUT MANY CLERGY SIMPLY CAN’T (and some won’t) AFFORD TO TAKE SOME TIME OUT TO BE.

And here’s where you come in.

SEND YOUR VICAR AWAY!

Get together with a few others from your church; buy a gift voucher from The Vine and give it to your stressed out and hard working Vicar, who will benefit enormously from a few days here and come back renewed and refreshed and better able to serve you in the strength of the Lord!

SEND YOUR VICAR AWAY TO US. We promise to send a renewed one back to you.

And do pass this on to your friends in other churches too!

Days Away

January ain't what it used to be

i was out walking at 5.15pm yesterday - and IT WASN'T QUITE DARK!

The days are lengthening.

It wasn't quiet either - the birds were singing at full volume, louder and more mellifluous than for some time.

And it wasn't cold. In fact I was too warm in my coat.

BUT IT'S JANUARY!

It felt like spring. And my heart skipped and my feet followed and I gave thanks for the feeling of spring and the pleasure of the hint of spring. Grateful to the Lord for all His blessings and lovingkindnesses.

Yet it doesn't feel right. Surely January ought to be cold and dark and gloomy; a long month of drabness and gloom. A month of feeling blue and SAD. (Seasonally adjusted depression). And that's why we've looked at hugging and at having a January survival kit.

Marion sent me this lovely remedy:

I found a recipe for dark January days in the Message version of Eccl. 9 - not a book I generally linger in.

Seize life! Eat bread with gusto,
Drink wine with a robust heart.
Oh yes—God takes pleasure in your pleasure!
Dress festively every morning.
Don’t skimp on colors and scarves.
Relish life with the spouse you love
Each and every day of your precarious life.

i love that! So I looked it up and read the next few verses too:

Each day is God’s gift. It’s all you get in exchange
For the hard work of staying alive.
Make the most of each one!
Whatever turns up, grab it and do it. And heartily!

Carpe Diem!

January 2014 isn't perhaps the type of January we've come to expect. Yet many of us can sometimes have those SAD feelings at this time of year: so on the blog we've looked at living as well as we dare, getting enough sleep (or hibernating!) and realising that lots of hugs and cuddles can have a very salutary effect upon us - as well as being rather fun sometimes. At least three hugs a day!

Then there is the summer to look forward to - planning a trip, and especially, planning a Pilgrimage, to walk the Via Francigena in Tuscany! A vacation with a difference  - led by my husband and me. Come too? Walk from Montalcino to Viterbo, or from San Gimignano to Montalcino.

FULL DETAILS NEXT WEEK - WATCH THIS SPACE!

I love, too,  the idea of special things to do at this time of year.

I read on a blog somewhere ideas for establishing routines/traditions that you do ONLY during the dark winter months — enjoying the season for what it is. The two ideas that I can recall at the moment are stringing white twinkle lights on your mantel and turning them on as soon as you get home (or when it turns dark) and routinely dining by candlelight. Very cozy, which sounds like a good theme for January!

We love cozy!  So retreatants over these past two weeks have been dining by candlelight, and there are twinkly white lights in the morning room which cheer us all each evening. And log fires in the sitting room (and in our private snug)

And lovely scents -

Another beat-the-January-blues idea — buying special hand cream/lotion/soap, scented candles, bath salts, etc., in scents that are pleasing and cozy — and use them only in the winter months (and it so happens that post-Christmas is a good time to get them on sale!). I think this goes along nicely with the “live as well as you dare” theme!

Come on retreat soon and enjoy all of these things:

There's Hotel de Chocolate and Writers' Weekends coming up - book soon as there is limited availability

And what not to do?

On the list of things NOT to do can you please add: lounging in front of the TV watching indiscrimately any daft old programme at the same time as munching on junk food and drinking too much alcohol.. Very bad habit to get into but easy to fall into this trap in the Winter evenings..  So one vote for enjoying countryside and writing poetry and a NO vote for tv !

So there's a choice - yours and mine, as Mandy wrote:

It is a conscious choice and when I allow myself time for a hot bubble bath, pjs and bed at a sensible hour with a hot water bottle, it is so much better than when I listen to the lure of social media or reading just a little more. Thanks for the reminder that we only need to be who God calls us to be.

And perhaps the best comment?

Sometimes its good to have someone else remind you(i.e. you!) to enjoy the good things in life rather than feeling guilty for it. For me it would include regular times with my husband and making sure I get time on my own - with God and also just space to 'be'…. For light January reading I highly recommend Alexander McCall Smith books - all the ones set in Edinburgh. they are light hearted, easy to read and fun. I am also going to read Tim Keller's 'The Meaning Of Marriage' this month so hold me accountable on that one! I look forward to hearing more ways to survive……  Surely one fun thing is day trips to see your granddaughters?!

Those little granddaughters hug the best! So I'm seeing all three of my granddaughters this weekend.
