A LENT RETREAT MORNING

A LENT RETREAT MORNING

IF YOU ARE …..

“IF – IF you are the Son of God!”  Here is a huge issue: who are you?  Are you really the Son of God?  If you are then you can do this - or this  - or this.  So are you really who you say you are, who you are claiming to be?  And what’s the point of all this? WHAT’S THE POINT OF YOU?

Who is Christ? And who am I in Christ? AND WHAT’S THE POINT OF ME? especially at the moment.

LENT RETREAT BOOKING

The retreat will be on Zoom and you will be sent the link

along with the e-Journal

a few days before the retreat.

A slightly shorter morning this time, following comments from the Advent retreat that 3 hours was a little too long! We’ll have a 5 minute comfort break in the middle, and plenty of time for reflection. And remember that no-one sees you - this isn’t interactive, so you can stay in pj’s if you like!

Why not invite friends, family, your home group, to join us and experience this time together - it could be a great starting point for discussion, prayer, journeying through Lent together.

ONE THING I KNOW FOR CERTAIN - and it brings hope

Happy New Year to you!

Except it isn't for many people. Already, just one week in, we're frustrated, depressed, stressed, anxious ..... with nothing to look forward to, nothing we can plan ….

Hadn't all we secretly hoped that a new year would end the chaos and be a new hopeful start-over? That we could breathe a sigh of relief as we watched those fireworks over London and enjoy just a tinge of hope and optimism and thoughts of better times?

IMG_2466.jpeg

As I too was hit by the longings and weariness of things not changing and looking worse than ever, I asked God for a verse, a word, to take with me into 2021. (twenty twenty won, ha ha. Oh, and then there's twenty twenty too ...)

It's something I've been doing for several years. Sometimes the word/verse stays with me all year and really helps my walk with God; it becomes a steadfast baseline to stabilise and support.

Just after Christmas, the word HOPE dropped into my mind. I thought about it, turned it over, ruminated and chewed on it. Then a verse popped out on a photo as I was looking back through my (too large) photo file on my laptop. It was a photo of something I'd written some time ago and there it was:

Romans 15:13.(see below) HOPE again. Then this turned up on Facebook. It’s by @aardvanti from Mumbai.

75100e22ec5b41caa20e3f4214bc324a.jpeg

I sensed this was all a God-incidence. By January 1st I was raring to go! A new journal for Christmas from a dear friend; a book by Rowan Williams; several verses and thoughts creatively designed on Canva to remind, encourage, and stick in the journal; a list of verses about HOPE; a Bible reading plan about HOPE.

I was, am, full of HOPE.

It's not the wishy-washy wanting or wishing for something. 'Hope the sun shines today; hope there's a parking space near the shop...'

This is a definite, positive, HOPE. A belief, a trust. Which, when I looked it up in the dictionary, is the old, archaic definition of HOPE -a trust and desire.

HOPE is so much more than wishing or longing, when it comes from and trusts in God: a confident expectation that he fulfils his promises.

And then came Lockdown 3. Or is it 300.

Whatever, it feels never ending. So, I asked myself, what will I choose to do with this time. Because all times belong to him.

Even lockdown.

Will I use it to grow a bit? Choose not to shrink a bit?

9aefaab3a63f4d7fa308791ec790d301.jpeg

From ‘Candles in the Dark’ by Rowan Williams - faith, hope and love in a time of pandemic, written during lockdown 1.

I'm reading one chapter (they are short reflections) each morning.

Here's a conscious decision: and I'm choosing to grow a bit. Because I'm choosing HOPE

7e2b4aa3629e472686ebf8489830cb0a.jpeg

Because lockdown is just a chapter of the book of my life; it's not the whole; I can choose how I use it. And I'm using it to grow my HOPE in the One who makes all things new.

So I've printed out all these images and stuck them in my new journal.I'm loving it. I'm inspired. I'm hopeful. I have the thrill of HOPE.

HOPE

b7127628f0c3493cb404254aa9b32723.jpeg

I've started with verses about HOPE in the Psalms. And I'm realising how often HOPE is linked with TRUST.

The Lord alone is our radiant HOPE and we trust him with all our hearts... As we trust, we rejoice with an unconditional joy.

Let your love overshadow us for we trust in you. Ps 33:20-22 (TPT)

I am trusting you, Lord God, saying, 'You are my God. My future is in your hands' ... Be strong and take courage all you who put your HOPE in the Lord. Ps 32:14, 23-24 (TPT)

May the God of all HOPE fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him. Roms 15:13 (NIV)

So I have a choice: to put my HOPE in God, to trust him; or to put my hope and trust in other things.

What do I hope and trust in? My own ego? My own strength and resilience? My health, my well-being, my lifestyle and possessions, my tribe, the number of likes on social media ....

One thing I know for certain: when I can truly say, in Christ alone my hope is found, then I will know him as my light, my strength, my song.

I depend on God alone; I put my HOPE in him. He alone protects and saves me; he is my defender, and I shall never be defeated. My salvation and honour depend on God; he is my strong protector; he is my shelter. Trust in God at all times, my people. Tell him all your troubles, for he is our refuge. Ps 62: 5-8 (GNB)

He gives strength for today and bright HOPE for tomorrow - yes, even in 2021 and lockdown.

Where is YOUR hope and trust?

NEW YEAR

NEW LOOK!

The website has had a make-over. Pop over and have a root around - you might find something you like!

With confident hope in the One who makes all things new, I pray you have a good new year!

Now may God, the inspiration and fountain of hope, fill you to overflowing with uncontainable joy and perfect peace as you trust in him. And may the power of the Holy Spirit continually surround your life with his super-abundance until you radiate with hope throughout 2021

THE SPICE RETREAT 2021

The  SPICE RETREAT begins in January and I'd love for you to join us - I really don't want you to miss out!  I know that for many, going on Retreat or Pilgrimage is a life changing event; but many of us are hesitating to travel right now or commit to travel yet . So a destination retreat isn’t possible right now.

And many of us are feeling a little lost, a little weary, with all that's going on right now.

Wondering who am I?

Wondering what's the point of me?

Or even, what difference can I make in the current world situations?

Here’s where the SPICE RETREAT online can be of help: By the end of this new online retreat, you’ll know how God made you YOU, you’ll know your best YOU, and you’ll be able to be your best YOU in everyday life, work and relationships.  No matter what is going on around you.

Screenshot 2020-09-08 at 12.58.28.jpeg

SPICE: Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Creative, Emotional

The SPICE RETREAT will:

-       Enable you to be your best you in everyday life, work and relationships.

-       Help you to make a lasting transformation to live your life as God intended, as he created you to be

-       Give you proven tools to become your best you, that you can use in any situation

-       Show you how God has put you together in the 5 areas that are the wells of contentment: Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual, Creative and Emotional

-       Show you how to arrange your days so that you are experiencing deep contentment, joy and confidence in your everyday life with God (as Dallas Willard said)

-       Give you the freedom and power to be yourself and help you to let go of who you think you’re supposed to be or who you think others expect you to be

-       Help you to come alive and be your best YOU in ways you might not even have imagined and that will last a lifetime

The SPICE RETREAT is for:

-       Anyone who wants to go deeper with God and discover how he created you to be

-       The person who feels lost and uncertain in life, especially in these uncertain times

-       Someone who needs to re-set and start-over, to be re-activated with a new purpose

-       Those who are created by God

Don't worry if you are not based in the UK - On a previous Spice Retreat there were participants from Australia, France, the USA and the UK - so those from overseas often were on a very different timescale but with the Forever Access they could watch at a time to suit themselves.

The SPICE RETREAT consists of:

-       5 weekly sessions, of 60 minutes each, available to be accessed at any time. These include input, guided times for reflection, and other specials such as led meditations, contemplative prayer, imaginative prayer, lectio divina, and various ways to hear God speak into your life. You will have forever access to these

-       Downloadable weekly journals, that you can keep, personalise and use at any time

-       Suggestions for how to use SPICE to create your own individual retreat at a time to suit you

-       A retreat handbook of things that will enhance the SPICE RETREAT

-       Optional One-on-one Spiritual Direction/mentoring sessions. These will be online with me via Facetime/Whatsapp/Skype/Zoom. (your preference)

The weekly emails with all the information for the next session will be emailed to you on a Thursday.

But don’t worry -  you will have forever access, so you can use them at a time that suits you.

 QUESTIONS YOU'VE ASKED:

Won't it cost a lot?

Often people are able to purchase the things they really really want, even if they think they've no spare money at the moment. Or they will buy takeaway coffees and grab a lunch meal deal regularly. Yet those things aren't transformative, are not investments in what's truly important. I think if you want to be the person God intended you to be, and if you want to go deeper into living life to the full, then no price is too expensive! However, there are different options available, including the early bird prices, and it's still something that's life transformational, learning more of how God has made you to be. And most people haven't spent much at all over recent months, with no shopping, travel, holidays or even daily commutes! So isn't it worth investing in going deeper with the Lord instead?

What if it's not the right time for me?

Actually, is it ever the right time? And actually the start of a new year is a great time to do this.

For me there's always something else more pressing than spending time with God! So investing in something which MAKES me have that special Sacred Time is worth its weight in gold. And maybe there's really more time available now than normal.

IMG_8709.jpeg

What if I can't do it in January?

The sessions will stay up on the closed Youtube channel and you have forever access to them, so you can choose when to watch, or repeat them whenever it would be helpful. On previous Spice Retreats there were participants from Australia, France, the USA and the UK - so those from overseas often were on a very different timescale!

The spice retreat was an oasis in my week and for that matter day as I worked through some of the things in the journal.  I’ve a week in a retreat house booked for the end of September my Spice journal and some of the recommended books I’ve bought will be coming with me.   - H.C.

I am in a place of transition .. and this course spoke to a journey I was already pursuing about being the best – the real me, rather than a good all-rounder who was getting worn out doing too much else that took me away from my true desires and calling for this time. I long to develop the contemplative and what comes out of that and can now do so.  - J.S.

Watched on Tuesday mornings when I could guarantee no distractions. So far I have watched all the sessions twice. I intend to replay bits of each over the next few weeks. It is great to be able to go back, to rewind bits, to pick out things that catch my attention the second time around. - S.J.

Exceeded my expectations. Such a rich resource especially with the SPICE journal handouts each week. - S.S.

I am excited to be sharing this online retreat with you and my prayer is that the Lord will reach out and touch each one of us and transform us to be the people He has made us to be so that we can live Life in all its fullness.  Come and join us and learn more about the 5 areas that make you YOU!

ARE YOU READY?

Are you ready for what lies ahead?

Social media, magazines and newspapers are awash with suggestions and advice about how you might best deal with the ‘unprecedented’ situation, how you can best survive the next six months, how you can find the key to health and happiness now in spite of what is happening all around us.

‘The Times’ recently recommended cooking outside on a winter barbeque, refuelling with hot chocolate after a run, taking a nap during the day with the curtains drawn, and learning how to pickle cucumbers.

Really? Learn how to pickle cucumbers?

Jamie Oliver seems to pickle cucumbers …..

Jamie Oliver seems to pickle cucumbers …..

Moving on swiftly ….

What do you need to be ready for WHATEVER may lie ahead?

Like most people, you probably don’t know what lies ahead and you fear the worst. Actually, isn’t that true for most of us most of the time? We none of us knows what lies ahead even though we plan and prepare and presume that what we schedule and diarize will indeed happen. Eventually. Somehow.

Anthony Robbins, the American motivational speaker and author, (I know, a Marmite situation, love it or hate it...) said,

People are shaped not by how things go when things are going well; people’s lives are shaped by the most difficult times. … This is your time for training, for practice, to prepare for what’s ahead…I guarantee you, winter will end, and when it does you will emerge that far ahead.  You will have taken your life to a new level.

How will your life be shaped in these difficult times?

Are you ready for what lies ahead?

How will you take your life, your walk with God, your spirituality, to a whole new level?
What will help you to prepare and to go deeper with God?

One thing that will happen in spite of Covid and economic downturns and whatever else life throws at us, is December 25th.  Unless they change the very calendar before then (anything is possible right now, right?!)

185819_10152389299500504_731954364_n 2.jpeg

December 25th. Remembering the birth of Emmanuel, God with us.

Christmas.

Maybe not in the way we normally remember and celebrate.

Maybe there will need to be new creative ways, less commercialism, (there’s always hoping!) other ways to celebrate the Saviour’s coming.

The Christian Church has traditionally prepared for Christmas and the coming of the Christ child through the four weeks beforehand, the time known as Advent. Perhaps this year, as lockdowns increase and uncertainty and fear surround us, it’s a good year to concentrate even more on the things of God.

To prepare for the coming of the Saviour.

To celebrate and remember Advent.

Not just the giddy opening of advent calendars filled with luscious chocolates (for the young) or gin or whisky (for the slightly older). But the burning of beautiful advent candles in church and at home. The hanging of a Jesse tree and its ornaments and verses. Special daily readings, such as Lucy Rycroft’s “Redeeming Advent” or Vicki Cottingham’s daily devotional.

But also a really special time of preparation, a time when it’s just you and God, allowing him the time and space to speak into your life? Here’s one especially for you:

An Advent Retreat
